This was my second aerial shoot for this fast developing city. New Westminster always poses a particular problem for aerial photography because it’s waterfront faces the Fraser River, with Surrey on the opposite side.
Due to flying restrictions, I have to be 1000 feet above the tallest structure at all times, whether it’s a high-rise, homes or water. The trick is to use a float plane so you can lower that to 500 feet over water when necessary.
So, that’s what I did. I rented a float plane and pilot and shot all the new development around New Westminster. Float planes are louder and fly with more vibration than a Cessna or helicopter, so they’re not as comfortable to work in, but if it’s what I have to do to get the shot I’ll do it!
In the end, I was able to produce images that really excited my client, something they had never received from other aerial photographers. This is the most generous compliment I could get.
The City of New Westminster has had the pleasure of working with Jon for several years. We’ve hired him for a wide range of projects, including headshots, events, stock images and aerial photos. We trust his judgment and keen eye when out on a project for us, and always find that his images are both artistic in nature and capture the best qualities of our city.Ashleigh Young - Communication Coordinator City of New Westminster
